A 7-day trip is a varied expedition alternated by trains referring to different subjects, e.g. history, astronomy, geology, ethnography. The trip starts with visiting a nuclear-resistant shelter, preceded by stepping in the oldest constantly operating cinema in the world – the Pionier cinema in Szczecin. After a lesson in recent history in the abandoned Soviet military base, we head towards the Baltic Sea to watch shifting sand dunes in one of the 23 Polish National Parks. The following route leads along the sea coast, through the unique Hel peninsula all the way till its end. Satisfied by the scents of the sea we ride southwards along the meridian axis of the country into the Karpaty mountain direction. On our way, we visit Malbork, Toruń and Gniezno. We also ride through a mountain range, that was created at the bottoms of prehistoric oceans, i.e. Cracow – Częstochowa the Jurassic Highland Chain. Among its unbelievably rocky shapes lie many medieval fortresses. We sightsee one of the best preserved – castle in Ogrodzieniec, followed by a look at the Błędowska Desert. We stay one night in Cracow, to visit the following day, the Wieliczka salt mine considered to be the most beautiful in the world. We also have a tough but important, non-obligatory lesson of history in Auschwitz. For dessert, we leave Lower Silesia and its appealing castles and palaces, with renaissance Moszna and Wojanów in the front. A short walk at the top of the Szczeliniec mountain will surely help in stretching our legs after long hours spent in the motorcycle’s saddle.

We spend most of the second day of the trip at the Baltic sea shore. By the back roads, leading through thick forests of the Landscaped Park of Słupia Valley, we reach shifting sand dunes at Słowiński National Park. Wide, sandy belt of spits is a unique phenomenon in Poland. Walking on hills of sand, it is easy to feel like in the African desert. The beauty of this place is additionally heightened by the direct bordering on the sea. After visiting the dunes, we can rest and dine in a nearby restaurant. The following main point of the programme is a ride along the Hel peninsula, a magnificent, 34 km long, thin strip of land. On this tiny, 150 – 300 m wide passage, surrounded by navy waters, runs a road and a railway. The spit divides the Baltic Sea from Puck Bay. In a few places we can drink in the waters of both reservoirs simultaneously. After booking in, we head to tour the town of Hel, i.e. seal aquarium, lighthouse, port and artillery defensive positions from the era of WW II.

The main threads of the third day of the trip, seem not to have much in common, however the truth is surprisingly different. Nicolas Copernicus, who is called the man who stopped the Earth and pulled out the Sun, was living in the times of the Teutonic Knights’ Order. Back roads are replaced by a motorway for a while, to cover a relatively long distance quickly and efficiently. Leaving the sea shore, we step to the bunkers placed crosswise the Hel peninsula, just after the village of Jastarnia. One of them is picturesquely placed on the beach. Then we go to Malbork, which from the 14-th century was a capital of the Teutonic Knights’ Order. We tour the immense, 13-th century castle there, which belongs to the UNESCO world heritage list. With the use of a short section of motorway, we ride to Toruń – the home town of Nicolas Copernicus. We walk around the appealing, historic town, where every corner reminds us of the great astronomer. We plan to have lunch in the old town of Toruń. There is not so far from Toruń to Gniezno, where we move to stay for the night. Having been accommodated, we can continue to the historic plot of the day, by spending some time in the heart of the old town of the first capital of Poland.

The fourth day of the Week In Poland is spent travelling from the first capital of Poland – Gniezno, to the second – Cracow. Similarly as a day before, we have a relatively long distance to travel, so we use a section of motorway and express road to make the way faster and gain some time. After covering the first half of the day’s distance, we arrive at the Cracow – Częstochowa Jurassic Highland Chain. The Jurassic Chain is a region characterised with unbelievable shapes of rocks protruding out of the surrounding land. There are also lots of caves, as the mountain range is one of the oldest in Poland. In medieval times, limestone rocks were ideal places to erect castles or fortresses. The high concentration of strongholds, appearing in this region is also caused by the fact, that in the medieval times, this region was the south – western border of Poland. The strongholds had been erected with the purpose of defending the state. We visit two ruins: in Olsztyn and in Ogrodzieniec. Afterwards, we ride to stop by the Błędowska Desert and pass the Hercules bludgeon – a limestone Monadnock standing next to the Pieskowa Skała palace. We have lunch in a restaurant nearby a group of rocks, called Skały Rzędkowickie, beloved by climbers. We stay for the night in Cracow. We suggest you to have a walk to the city’s beautiful square, especially for the sake of the fact, that our hotel is situated nearby.

Most of the fifth day of our trip, we spent close to Cracow. In the morning we go to the Wieliczka salt mine, which belongs to the UNESCO world heritage list. We walk the underground route, which runs 135 m under ground level, sightseeing the most beautiful parts of the phenomenal labyrinth. The length of all corridors in Wieliczka salt mine equals 300 km. There are also a sanatorium, chapel and restaurant located underground. From Wieliczka, making use of a section of motorway, we move to Oświęcim in order to visit former the concentration camp - Auschwitz. This hard, but meaningful lesson of history is an experience that falls deeply in the mind. For those, who estimate that participating in the trip around Auschwitz museum could be overwhelming, we have prepared an alternative motorcycle route in the nearby area, with a glass of alcohol-free beer in the Żywiec brewery. For the night we stay in Cieszyn, a small border town, valued for its specific, discreet charm.

The last but one day of our adventure in Poland, we spend almost completely on back, narrow, empty and winding roads leading through the Sudety mountain range. After several kilometres from our departure, we stop by a small nature reserve called Wielikąt. It was founded especially for preserving rare species of water birds. They need few minutes of silence to show up. After a slightly longer section farther, we reach castle Moszna, considered to be a building of unique architecture. It is famous for its 365 rooms and 99 towers. From Moszna castle we ride towards the Kłodzko Valley, surrounded by Table Mountains, Bardzkie Mountains, Bystrzyckie Mountains and Massif of Śnieżnik. Such a blend of scenery makes winding, mountain roads running between naked rocks and thick forests. The main attraction of Kłodzko Valley is the mountain Great Szczeliniec – the highest peak of Table Mountains. A short walk crossing over 665 steps, leading through rocky labyrinth, ends at the flat top, with prize of a wide panorama of the valley. This walk should be an ideal break after many days spent in the saddle. From Szczliniec, we head to Karpacz – a town at the foot of Śnieżka mountain – the highest peak of Karkonosze mountain range. From Karpacz we ride 15 km, to tour the beautifully restored Wojanów palace. Before departing to boring motorway trip home, we suggest having lunch in the exclusive décor of the above mentioned palace.
